All-over Persian Abadeh 1920s. All-over is a term used for any carpet where the entire ground is filled with a systematic repetition of a single motif. This piece is a typical example of an all-over zeli-soltan design. This particular motif is one of the most original and reconisable Persian motifs. It comprises a bunch of large red rorses, either in a small vase of alone. The proportion of vase to flowers, the size of the motif and the colours it is worked in may all vary, but essentially the design remains the same. The zeli-soltan originated in the Hamadan area, but since the turn of the century it has spread throughout Iran to many weaving centres, including Abadeh. It has not really been adopted by weavers outside Iran, however. In this fine carpet, the zeli-soltan is worked in red and blue on a mainly beige background. The spaces in between have been filled with much smaller all-over floral motifs, also in red and blue. On either side of every vase are a pair of love birds, which in Persian tradition symbolise love and marriage. The border is a fascinating combination of floral and semi-floral all-over patterns in red and muted gold on navy blue. The striking colours used in this rug are all vegetable dyes.
