A Fine, Majestic Tabriz carpet, displaying a revivalist version of the 17th century vase design. Wool on cotton foundation.

An extremely elegant Tabriz carpet dating to the early 20th century. The design is firmly based on the established ‘vase’ carpet group of classical carpets, originating from Kerman dating to the 17th century. As can be seen with the inclusion of other carpets presented in this collection, this group taken as a whole, is probably the greatest source of inspiration of 19th and 20th century Persian carpet designers. Carpets with this design present vases which are either conspicuous or inconspicuous. In this carpet the vases are inconspicuous. The scale of the motifs and the superb use of colour ensure that this carpet is a fine work of woven art. Noteworthy is the high number of colours beautifully applied to maximise the visual impact of the carpet. Wool on cotton foundation.
