Fine Persian Mahal Extra Large Carpet Allover design Wool Pile

A Fine Persian Mahal Carpet, Arak Area, Central Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation,

Mid 20th Century

The pale blue field with a 17th Century ‘strap work’ inspired design, displaying sinuous vines issuing small flower heads, overlaid with pale ochre curvilinear arabesque scrolls, and overlaid with similar terracotta arabesque scrolls, within a terracotta border enclosing continuous complementary ivory arabesque scrolls around pale ochre palmettes alternating with pale blue palmettes, surrounded by a plain pale blue surround.

Persian Mahal carpets are made in town and village workshops in and around Arak in West Central Persia. This magnificent decorative Persian Mahal carpet displays a design based on a recognised 17th Century ‘Group’ of carpets known as ‘strapwork’ carpets, defined by a multi layered pattern displaying sinuous vines issuing small flower heads overlaid with two tiers of scrolling curvilinear split palmette arabesques. This rendition displays an open uncrowded design characteristically of Persian Mahal interpretation. The bold drawing of the two layers of scrolling arabesques is tempered and softened by the bottom layer of sinuous vines and small flower heads. The terracotta border displays a complementary layered pattern using the same motifs and pattern elements as seen in the main field. The colours are typically from a 20th Century Persian Mahal carpet palette, pale blue, terracotta, pale ochre, and ivory used to create a stunning decorative carpet which would grace both traditional or contemporary interior settings. The presence of a plain outer surround, in this case seen in pale blue is a consistent characteristic in Persian Mahal carpets.
