Fine Persian Nain Rug Medallion design Fine Wool and Silk

A Fine Persian Nain Rug, Central Persia,  Wool and Silk Highlights on Cotton Foundation,

Mid 20th Century

The ivory field with an ‘architectural’ style star and strap work central medallion linked to mirrored palmettes issuing pairs of serrated curled leaves, supported by curvilinear meandering scrolling vines adorned with palmettes, and flower heads and curled serrated leaves, issuing pairs of curvilinear vines adorned with flower heads and small leaves, ivory pendant, palmette and vine spandrels, within an ivory border enclosing continuous palmettes linked by curvilinear meandering vines adorned with flower heads ending in arabesques.

The city of Nain is a relatively recently established centre for the production of decorative furnishing carpets and rugs with designs predominantly based on 17th Century Classical Persian designs. Carpet production became established here in the 1930’s and rapidly became a significant centre for the production of exceptional decorative carpets and rugs, partly due to the close proximity to Isfahan, an historically important centre for the production of technically fine and highly decorative rugs with a tradition of carpet making dating back to the 16th Century. It is inevitable that much of Nain pattern repertoire would be hugely influenced by established Isfahan workmanship, and traditional Classical iconography. The technical fineness of much of Nain workmanship is comparable to the finest technical finesse as seen in any other significant centre of Persian urban carpet production. A good deal of emphasis is placed upon the colour palette which is distinctive to Nain carpets. Shades of blue and beige and ivory are primarily present, and ivory silk is frequently used as a ‘highlighting’ material to enhance the visual appearance of their rugs and carpets. Deep red is often seen as a detail colour, and when seen creates a complementary contrasting element, as can be seen in this rug. Central medallion formats are a major part of their design repertoire, though all over repeat patterns are also prevalent.

This Persian Nain rug presents a central medallion inspired by an architectural feature as seen as decoration adorning  interior domed ceilings made from tin glazed tiles. Such architectural influences are often seen in fine Persian Nain rug patterns. The supporting pattern details are based upon traditional urban work shop designs dating from the 17th Century Safavid era. These traditional Classical palmette and vine patterns are often multi planed with highly detailed pattern drawing. In this case, the supporting palmette and vine decoration is presented as a single plane which gives an overall open fluid appearance enhanced by the symmetry of the design on both the horizontal and vertical axis. The border pattern displays a similar flowing palmette and vine pattern, enhancing the overall visual appearance of this Persian Nain rug. Silk highlights framing pattern details, further enhance the visual impact and flow of this sophisticated and highly decorative Persian Nain rug design.
