Persian Pictorial Kashan Rug Pictorial Silk on Silk

This Persian Kashan rug is published in;

pp. 128-129.

Pictorial Persian Kashan Late-19th century. Kashan is a city in central Iran with a carpet-weaving tradition that goes back centuries. This example of Kashan weaving is an old pictorial rug of pure silk, with human figures, a horse, buildings and a carefully drawn landscape. The border is filled with an all-over pattern that is traditional to Kashan. The colours are generally soft tones of pink and beige. Pink is common in old Kashan rugs, particularly in those made of silk (In woollen rugs Kashan weavers tended use tones of madder red and navy). In carpet terms, this piece is antique. Old Kashan silks of this type can be extremely valuable if in good condition and much more expensive than woollen Kashans of similar quality. Moreover, old-style silk Kashan are no longer woven in large enough quantities for export to the west. Silk carpets that are similar in theme and design to Kashans are now produced in some quantity in modern Qum.
