Sanandaj is a major city in Kurdistan known for the production of decorative rugs and carpets displaying characteristic styles of design associated with Kurdish tribal tradition, and designs associated with the neighbouring Bidjar area. The pattern seen here is invariably associated with Bidjar and known as the ‘Gol Farangi’ design. The term ‘Gol Farangi’ literally means ‘Foreign Flower’ and refers to the rose bouquet spray, which adorns a shaped cartouche, framed in a Rococo style, certainly derived from a European textile design. The shape and outlining of each cartouche retains a strong flavour of 18th Century French Rococo design.

This design is frequently seen in carpets from this region made in the late 19th and into the 20th Century, and due to its frequency, must have been a popular style of design in demanding, appreciative markets. In this Persian Sanandaj carpet the ‘Gol Farangi’ cartouches are presented with a magnificent pale blue background supporting bright red and coral rose sprays, ochre plant stems on a bed of bright green foliage. The range and tone of these colours presents a highly decorative image and is enhanced by the darker blue background colour which creates an effective harmonic contrast to support the overall visual effect. The design of the border is characteristically seen in carpets of this style, displaying in this instance, alternating fan palmettes and small ‘Gol Farangi’ framed within continuous arabesques. The colours tones as seen in the main field are repeated in the border pattern details maintain continuity to the overall superb decorative effect.

This Persian Sanandaj carpet presents a magnificent rendition of this recognised, popular design.
