Garden & Panel Persian Baluchi 1950s. The Baluchis were, and some still are, a nomadic tribal people, who live along the eastern borders of Iran and into Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nomadic Baluchis produce pileless weavings, but today piled carpets in distinctive dark colours are woven by Baluchis who have settled in villages in the Khorasan region of northeast Iran. The Baluchis are known for their use of deep red, dark brown and often a strong rust colour, combined with dark blue. In this example, the geometric floral pattern of the central field suggests two designs: the gol associated with Bukhara carpets of Central Asisa, and the mina khani, or daisy, motif of Veramin. Hooked diamonds, which can be seen as stylised tarantulas, run round the main border and round that in turn is a geometrical reciprocal pattern. These design elements and the small size, together with the fact that the carpet has been woven in wool on wool, show that this is a tribal weaving, not the product of a city workshop.
