An Extremely Fine Kashan Silk Rug, Central Persia, Silk on Silk Foundation

Mid 20th Century

The red field with a central blue leaf edged lobed medallion enclosing a similar lobed ivory medallion supporting a pale blue leaf edged cartouche all with meandering curvilinear vines issuing palmettes, flower heads and leaves, supported by a single layer of intricate meandering tendrils issuing polychrome palmettes, flower heads and curled serrated leaves, similar blue, ivory and pale blue floral spandrels, within a blue border enclosing continuous ‘in and out’ polychrome palmettes, alternating with flower head roundels linked by ornate arabesque scrolls

Kashan was the largest city in Central Persia during the 17th Century, and virtually all traffic between Esfahan and the east passed through there. Due to the significant geographical location, Kashan became a popular stopping point on a bustling trade route during the 17th century Safavid Era. During this era in which carpet weaving flourished in Persia, Kashan developed a reputation as one of the finest weaving centres of the east, and as such, Persian Kashan Rugs are of the very finest Persian rugs and carpets. Kashan was one of the most important centres of silk production since Safavid times, and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan.

At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality rugs and carpets, striving to continue the high standards of design and technique established in the 17th century classical era. They often incorporate medallion designs, but all over repeat patterns are frequently seen.

This exceptionally fine Kashan Rug epitomises the very best of Kashan artistry related to the ‘revival’ of Urban Persian rug production. The central medallion format as seen here is based on 17th century classical prototypes, and the main base colours of red, blue, pale blue and ivory are traditional to the Persian Kashan palette. However the immense range of colours used to define the intricately detailed pattern motifs is exceptional and used to staggering decorative effect. Varying shades of blue, green ochre and ivory are combined adjacent to one another to ensure every detail is treated with equal significance. The wonderful detailed border and minor ivory and pale blue guard borders continues the theme of fluidity, fine drawing and balance, acting as a highly complementary contributing factor to the overall harmonic composition. To create such finesse the weaver of this Persian Kashan silk rug would certainly be amongst the most highly skilled weavers in Kashan.
