Persian Qum Rug Old | Stripe Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere)

A Rare Qum Rug, Central Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation,

The vertical striped field with alternating ivory and coral canes each enclosing thirteen blossoming plants, the ivory columns with plants adorned with pairs of small birds, within an ivory border enclosing similar continuous plants, alternating with differing plant, pale blue flower head and ribbon vine guard borders.

The city of Qum is a recently established centre for the production of urban style rugs with workshops appearing there from around 1927 onwards. It rapidly became a significant and important centre for the creation of technically extremely fine silk rugs and carpets, though fine wool pile rugs are also made there. The repertoire of their designs is varied, ranging from designs based on Safavid Persian traditions of the 16th and 17th Centuries, through to individual creative designs of unparalleled technical excellence and artistic visual excellence, which can often be described as ground breaking.

The vertical columned format as seen in this Persian Qum rugis often referred to as the ‘moharamat’ design, in this case presented in alternating two background colours of equal widths, and is particularly seen in early Persian Qum rugs, though not exclusive to Persian Qum rug designs. Its origins could well date back to 16th and 17th Century Persian textile designs. The drawing of the plants is reminiscent of a style of drawing as seen in 17th Century Moghul Indian carpets. Such cross fertilisation of pattern details is a frequent occurrence in the development of designs across established traditions.  The vertical ‘canes’ display partial plants disappearing behind the top end border often referred to as ‘infinite repeat’ suggesting the main field design continues for eternity. This is a decorative historical device certainly originating from the Classical era of the 17th Century.

The colours of these plants are typically from a traditional Qum palette, utilising shades of aquamarine, ochre, red and blue, and ivory with brown outlining magnificently juxtaposed to create a highly decorative, homogenous design superbly executed by the highly skilled and versatile Persian Qum weavers.

This Persian Qum rug, embodies all the expected attributes of fine Qum artistry, presenting a decorative formal rare design, with Classical elements in a ‘Revivalist take’  presented with appealing 20th Century colour palette to suit both contemporary and traditional interior settings.
