Persian Gabbeh of Village Girl Rug Pictorial Wool Pile

This Persian Gabbeh Rug is published in;

Oriental Carpets, ‘A buyers guide‘, Essie Sakhai, London.

pp. 130-131.

This is a simple pictorial gabbeh carpet. The human figure is drawn geometrically, including shades of muted brown and beige with touches of red, against an expanse of deep red, the traditionally favoured background colour. The border is an all-over triangular geometric pattern in three contrasting colours – beige, black and muted orange. The combination of the border colours is striking next to the simple plain red of the main ground. Wool has been used throughout and the weave is coarse. The colours have been produced from vegetable dyes. In some gabbehs, the brightly contrasting colours and bold regularity of the border seen here might serve as the entire pattern of the carpet.
