Very Fine Persian Tabriz Rug – Signed – Pazyryk Design
Rug #842Signed, Persian Tabriz Rug Pazyryk Design Allover design Pure Silk
This signed Persian Tabriz rug is very finely woven in silk displaying a design based on the historically important Pazyryk rug, (See below). All the elements are finely drawn and presented in a complementary range of colours including copper red, pale blue, beige, ivory, with dark blue outlining juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the visual impact of the composition.
The Pazyryk rug was believed to have been made between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE and is the oldest extant example of a pile weaving. The rug was made in the Achaemenid style (first Persian Empire 559-331 BCE) and is housed in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersberg. It was excavated from a frozen tumulus tomb of a Scythian nobleman in the Pazyryk valley, high in the Altai mountains bordering Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
The Pazyryk rug measures 200cm. by 182cm. (6ft.7in. by 6ft.), is symmetrically knotted and demonstrates an already advanced weaving technique. Remarkably, little has changed in rug weaving over a twenty-five-century period. It is a powerful work of woven art. The design is simply drawn and finely executed, consists of a central rectangle divided into twenty-four squares, each containing a cruciform motif. The central rectangle is enclosed by two principal borders one containing a continuous line of twenty-four elks and the other a procession of twenty-eight warriors on horse-back or walking beside their mounts. These main borders are supported by secondary borders woven with intricate detail.
The significance of this find cannot be underestimated since the design of the rug shows the basic arrangement in what is seen as standard carpet design, defined by a central field area and with supporting main and secondary border framing.
