Extremely Fine, Persian Qum Carpet Medallion design Silk on Silk foundation

An Extremely Fine Qum Silk Carpet, Central Persia, Silk on Silk Foundation.

The tangerine field with a central pale blue and ivory circular floral medallion, linked to small mirrored blue floral pendants, supported by fine sinuous curvilinear arabesque scrolls issuing palmettes flower heads and curled hooked leaves, complementary beige arabesque scroll spandrels, within a complex blue border enclosing continuous  ivory pendants alternating with tangerine pendants supported by fine spiralling arabesque scrolls, ivory secondary borders.

The city of Qum is a recently established centre for the weaving of urban style rugs with workshops appearing there from around 1927 onwards. It rapidly became a significant and important centre for the creation of technically extremely fine silk rugs and carpets, though fine wool pile rugs are also made there. The repertoire of their designs is varied, ranging from designs based on Safavid Persian traditions of the 16th and 17th Centuries, through to individual creative designs of unparalleled technical and artistic visual excellence, which can often be described as ground breaking. The fine silk used in their creations allows the highly skilled weavers to draw exceptional precise detail often in minute scale.

This extremely fine Persian Qum silk carpet displays a design based on classical 17th century Safavid tradition of central medallion format.  This Persian Qum carpet exhibits exceptional, rare pattern detail in the presentation of the composition. Simply thousands of flora forms are depicted. The design displays extremely finely drawn arabesque scrolls issuing intricately drawn flora forms and leaves, presented in magnificent juxtaposed complementary colours from the extensive Qum palette. Presented over layers, such layering gives depth to the composition. An intriguing and highly decorative feature is seen in the presence of beige spandrels. Normally blue spandrels would be seen, repeating the main colour of the central medallion.  The  blue border presents a superb contrasting, yet complementary frame to the main field activity. The enclosed border pattern is drawn with the same consistent exceptional pattern drawing, which maintains continuity and harmony to the overall composition. This remarkably intricately drawn design is both symmetrical on both the horizontal and vertical axis, a feat of technical artistic virtuosity in its own right.

This Persian Qum silk carpet is an exemplary work of Qum woven art.
