Extremely Fine Persian Nain Carpet
Rug #2147Extremely Fine Persian Nain Carpet Medallion design Fine Wool and Silk on Cotton Foundation
An Exceptionally Fine Nain Rug, Central Persia, Wool and Silk on Cotton Foundation
Mid 20th Century
The dark blue field with a central circular pale blue and beige radiating pendant floral medallion linked to mirrored ogival floral pendants supported by two tiers of meandering curvilinear scrolling vines linking various palmettes adorned with flower heads ending in serrated leaves, complementary ivory and beige floral spandrels, within an ivory border enclosing continuous hooked leaf edged pendants amongst scrolling arabesques, beige floral guard stripes.
The city of Nain is a relatively recently established centre for the production of decorative furnishing carpets and rugs with designs predominantly based on 17th Century Classical Persian designs. Carpet production became established here in the 1930’s and rapidly became a significant centre for the production of exceptional decorative carpets and rugs, partly due to the close proximity to Isfahan, an historically important centre for the production of technically fine and highly decorative rugs with a tradition of carpet making dating back to the 16th Century. It is inevitable that much of Nain pattern repertoire would be hugely influenced by established Isfahan workmanship, and traditional Classical iconography. The technical fineness of much of Nain workmanship is comparable to the finest technical finesse as seen in any other significant centre of Persian urban carpet production. It can be said that the consistently high standard of artistry seen in Nain carpets has placed Nain as one of the ‘elite’ important recognised centres for the production of decorative carpets in 20th Century Persia. A good deal of emphasis is placed upon the colour palette which is distinctive to Nain carpets. Shades of blue and beige and ivory are primarily present, and ivory silk is frequently used as a ‘highlighting’ material to enhance the visual appearance of their rugs and carpets.
This magnificent, majestic Persian Nain carpet combines the very best of Nain artistry, detailed filigree detailing combined with consummate balance of exceptionally finely drawn pattern details with palmettes and floral elements presented over a two tiered vine system, the scale of which presents a sophisticated formal design, beautifully harmonic in design enhanced by the colours combined harmonically, to create the best possible appeal, consistent with maintaining the highest possible standards of Nain artistry.
