Persian Nain Extra Large Carpet Medallion design Fine  Wool and Silk

A Fine Nain Carpet, Central Persia, Wool and Silk Highlights on Cotton Foundation

Mid 20th Century

The green field with a central beige and ivory circular floral pendant medallion, linked to mirrored beige ogival pendants, supported by a two layers of scrolling hooked vines issuing flower heads ending in curled leaves overlaid with palmettes, beige and blue spandrels enclosing vines overlaid with palmettes, within a beige border enclosing continuous ivory winged pendants alternating with similar blue pendants linked by continuous meandering flowering vines

The city of Nain is a relatively recently established centre for the production of decorative furnishing carpets with designs predominantly based on 17th Century Classical Persian designs. Carpet production became established here in the 1930’s and rapidly became a significant centre for the production of exceptional decorative carpets. The fineness of much of Nain workmanship is comparable to the finest technical finesse as seen in any other significant centre of Persian urban carpet production.

A good deal of emphasis is placed upon the colour palette which is distinctive to Nain carpets. Shades of blue and beige with green and red are often present, ivory, and silk is frequently used as a ‘highlighting’ material to enhance the visual appearance of Persian Nain carpets. Central medallion formats are a major part of their design repertoire, though all over repeat patterns are also prevalent. This Persian Nain carpet displays an uncharacteristic green colour, which is very unusual as a main background colour, normally seen as a pattern detail colour. The pattern displaying overlaid curvilinear scrolling vines linking blue and ivory palmettes ending in curled serrated leaves is a style of design taken from 17th Century Persian city workshop tradition. Much of the pattern details include white silk highlighting, consistent with Nain tradition, and used to great effect here giving depth and enhancing the overall visual impact to the carpet. This is a fine example of Nain craftsmanship displaying a traditional established design presented in complementary colours from the established Nain palette.
