The city of Tabriz in North West Persia, was the earliest Capital of the Safavid Dynasty, ( 1502 – 1736 ), and as such is most likely to have been the centre of carpet production longer than any other significant centre in Persia.

Regarded as the ‘Golden Age ‘ of carpet making, the Safavid Shah’s were avid patrons of the arts in all subjects. They actively encouraged pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and creativity. Tabriz led the way, and as a result of this long tradition, Persian Tabriz carpets, influenced by varying cultures over time display a huge repertoire of varying designs from ‘medallion’ to overall repeat patterns. ThePersian Tabriz rugs often including animals and birds.

The range of colours is seemingly endless, and the combination of colours used is always carefully considered to create the most harmonic and decorative end product.

From these earlier times, these established traditions have continued through to the present day. As such, many exceptional Persian Tabriz carpets have been made closely based on the ‘original’ Persian Safavid carpet designs.

Patterns and designs also evolve over time and this unique Persian Tabriz rug is an example of such evolution. This Persian Tabriz rug displaying a style of design seen in a small definable group of technically superior 20th Century rugs. This group displays a variety of domestic birds amongst scattered flora drawn and presented in exceptional accurate detail, only possible due the superior quality of the materials and the skill of the weavers. The colours enhance the appearance and have been chosen to produce a harmonic stunning rendition. The colours used here include tones of brown, ochre, green, violet, and ivory on a cream background.

Tabriz workmanship at its very best is seen here, presenting a unique design from a recognised group which will inevitably stand the test of time as an exceptional work of Persian woven Art. The fact that this fine Persian Tabriz is signed by the master weaver, endorses this.
