Fine Turkish Hereke Biblical Scene Rug Pictorial Silk on Silk foundation

This remarkably fine Turkish Hereke silk rug , depicts biblical scenes and supporting Hebrew text arranged over four registers. It seems likely that this depiction is based on, or copied from a book illustration. The fine weave is applied in a ‘sketchy’ style reminiscent of pen and ink drawing. The representations are easy to read through presentation of the various stories by use of clearly defined registers. Delicate and limited use of  pastel toned colour effectively enhances the appearance  of the composition.

The top register shows porticos inscribed with Hebrew text supported by the stars of David.  The central  scene in this upper register depicts the barren Hannah asking Eli to pray for a child. The next register shows Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac with the angel preventing him. The third register tells the story of Balaam’s ass, and the bottom register relates to the story of  Isaac and Rebecca. All registers are framed between architectural columns. The use of architectural elements gives gravitas and focus to the stories presented.
