A splendid Bidjar carpet dating from the second half of the 19th century with a powerful medallion and corners design and typically bold and rich colouring. The huge ‘anchor’ pendants are typical of this design type of Bijar, as is the use of the Herati pattern as the interior patterning of both the central medallion and corners. As noted in the introduction to this section, the corner pieces often join across the ends at the side of the field, although on this carpet, this particular design feature is more by implication. Nevertheless, if the viewer considers the design in this way, then the overall design can be read as a ground with an all-over Herati pattern overlaid with an all-over sheet, which has had a large hole made in the middle and has been cut at the edges. These large rugs were made in Kurdish workshops and, with the ‘arabesque’ carpets attributed specifically to the town of Garrus, were extremely popular in 19th century Europe. They are now considered, rightly, as being among the masterpieces of late Qajar Persian weaving.
