The history of 20th century Persian rug weaving in Tehran remains to be documented. From the evidence of extant rugs, it does not seem to have long predated the official government body set up to establish quality control of exports in the 1930s, called the shirkat farsh. This rug is a comparatively early example of Tehran weaving, probably dating from the decade immediately before the Second World War. The hunting motifs are derived from Safavid Persian manuscripts. This is a very finely woven rug of its kind. Wool pile with silk highlights on a cotton foundation.
