Fine Persian Afshar Carpet Allover design | Geometric Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere)

This Persian Afshar carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 238,  p. 297.

An interesting Afshar main carpet from c.1900-20. The
field design consists of an all-over rhomboid tile pattern;
each tile has one of eight distinct ground colours and
contains a single stylised floral quatrefoil. The real point
of interest here is the design itself, a so-called
single-plane lattice. On modern carpets, it is principally
associated with the central Persian city of Joshaghan,
the old name of which, according to the early-20th century
specialist in Persian art, Arthur Upham Pope, was Joshaghan Qali
(i.e. Joshaghan [of the] carpets). However, although the name of
this city does appear in some historical records in connection with
carpet manufacture, all the surviving examples of 17th or early 18th
centuries have the ‘vase’ structure which most writers today
consider indicative of a Kerman origin. Pope, however, attributed
them to Joshaghan and such was his reputation in Iran (he worked
closely with the new Reza Shah Pahlavi, on the revival and
regulation of carpet weaving in the country during the late-1920s
and 1930s) that it seems likely that it was his advocacy of a
Joshaghan origin for carpets of this design that caused it to
become favourite with 20th century weavers in newly established
Joshaghan work shops. The principal group of Afshars, it should be
remembered, have lived close to Kerman for many centuries and
Kerman designs greatly influenced their weavings. This example
probably pre-dates Pope’s observations on Joshaghan and
suggests that there is greater historical justification for a Kerman
than a Joshaghan origin for this design.
