Alder Kazak Rug Medallion design Wool Pile

This Caucasian Kazak rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 333,  p. 410.

A Kazak rug from the south west Caucasus
with one of the most beautiful and powerful
designs associated with this area.
Called ‘Sewan Kazaks’ (and thus possibly
made in the vicinity of Lake Sewan),
they are characterised by a large
central medallion; this can either
take the form seen here, with blunt
arrow-head ends and axe-wing sides,
or with octagonal ends and straight sides
(or slight variations on one or the other).
There seems little doubt that this is
another variation on a theme of the
Chahar Bagh or ‘four gardens’.
Another Caucasian variant is
associated with the village of
Surahani in the Baku region; this has
a large medallion with ‘opposed’ octagonal
ends similar to one version of the
Sewan Kazak medallion. The four tree-like
motifs in the corners add weight to the garden theme.
The palette of this example is typically bold
and the rug dates from the second half
of the 19th century.
